Translation of Khutba (Friday November 9 2012)
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem. Praise to Allah and Assalat Wassalam on Prophet Muhammad S.A.W

My dear brothers and sisters in Islam, in today’s bayan, we will be looking at the status, Allah SWT has given to the masajid or mosques as we commonly call them. Allah SWT says in the Qur’an in Surat Tauba:
“The mosques of Allah shall be visited and maintained by such as believe in Allah and the Last Day, establish regular prayers, and practise regular charity, and fear none (at all) except Allah. It is they who are expected to be on true guidance. ” (S.9 V.18)
The messenger of Allah, Muhammad SAW said that when we see a man who keeps returning to the mosque, we should bear witness of his iman. Further, Hazrat Amr bin Memoon Al advi RA reports that the sahaba would be heard saying that mosques are the houses of Allah on this earth, and when one enters a mosque, Allah welcomes and looks after him.

Allah SWT commanded his prophets to build mosques as places of worship of Allah. Masjid Al –Haram was built by prophet Ibrahim and his son Ismael A.S, Masjid Al- Aqsa was built by prophet Suleiman and Masjid Nabawi by prophet Muhammad SAW. Likewise it is our duty to build mosques and establish them as well as populate them. The prophet Muhammad SAW said that the best places on this earth are the mosques and the worst are the markets, and that when we pass by the Riaz-e-janna, we should eat something from them. The Suhaba asked the rasool SAW what he meant by Riaz-e-janna, and the prophet SAW answered that Riaz-e-janna are the mosques and to eat from them means to pray/offer salah their as well as make dhikr in them. It is because of the importance of the mosques that they have been built in every generation and it is our duty to continue this obligation. Hazrat Usman R.A reports that the prophet of Allah, Muhammad SAW said that he who builds a mosque on this earth for Allah, Allah SWT makes a home for him in Jannah. It is our duty to not only build the mosques, but to further maintain them and populate them as well as assist in the running of the mosques in anyway that we can.
Allah SWT took an oath from prophet Ibrahim as in the Qur’an in Surat Baqara:
“Remember We made the House a place of assembly for men and a place of safety; and take ye the station of Abraham as a place of prayer; and We covenanted with Abraham and Isma'il, that they should sanctify My House for those who compass it round, or use it as a retreat, or bow, or prostrate themselves (therein in prayer). ” (S.2 V.125)

Etiquettes of the Mosques
Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri R.A reports that the messenger of Allah, Muhammad SAW said that when one of you enters the mosque, he should do so with his right foot and recite: Allah hummaftahli abwaba rahmatika, meaning Oh Allah open your doors of rehmah (blessing) on me and that when he leaves, he should do so first with his left foot and reciet:
Allah humma inni asaluka min fadhlik, meaning Oh Allah I seek Your blessing. Abu Khatada reports, that the prophet Muhammad SAW said that upon entering the mosque, one should offer two rakat of prayer as tahaiyatul masjid. We should make it a point to spend time in mosques and offer our prayers in congregation, as well as make dhikr and recite the Quran in Mosques. The Prophet Muhammad SAW used every opportunity to pray in the mosque, for example, he used to offer two rakats of Salat-ul-Duha at around mid-morning as he would be entering Medina after having exited it.

Just as we have been told to frequent mosques and pray in them as well as keep them clean, we have also been prohibited from doing certain acts in the mosque. On the authorities of Amr bin Shuaib and Abu Huraira R.A, they report that the prophet of Allah, Muhammad SAW forbade people from reciting worldly poems in the mosque, discussing worldly issue as well as conducting any form of business in the mosques that was not related to the mosque itself. So much so that he told the people to pray for the failure of any person who did business in the mosques, as mosques were and are not to be used for these purposes. The prophet Muhammad SAW also stated that we should refrain from eating or using products with disturbing smells that would also repel angels, such as raw onions and garlic, or cigarettes. Where such products are used or eaten one, should take appropriate measures to ensure that the smell is no longer there and that it will not distract other people in the mosque. Hazrat Aisha R.A reports that the prophet of Allah, Muhammad SAW said that we should build mosques, keep them clean and perfume them.

What is most important is that we not only build mosques but that we populate them to, meaning that we must frequent them and not leave them deserted. The prophet Muhammad SAW also said that when we see a man who has bound himself to the mosque, meaning that he frequents it so often that it is as though he lives there, then we should testify as to his iman or faith. It also appears in hadith that the prophet Muhammad SAW said, that there are three types of people for whom Allah has granted forgiveness: The first is one who partakes in Jihad in the name of Allah SWT, the second is he who frequents the mosques and the third is he who says salam as he enters his house.

During the time of the prophet Muhammad SAW, mosques were used as a place of worship, religious education institutions, advisory institutions, shariah courts, as well as departure points for people going on Jihad. Similarly, we too must ensure that our mosques serve a central point in our lives, as places where people gather not just on Fridays, but also on other days, where we hold Islamic discussions and perform dhikr together. The prophet Muhammad SAW said that there will come a time before the Day of Judgment, when very beautiful mosques shall be built and there will be people in them, but the people will not have any feeling or sense of being there.

Allah SWT says in the Qur’an in Surat Baqara:
“And who is more unjust than he who forbids that in places for the worship of Allah, Allah’s name should be celebrated?-whose zeal is (in fact) to ruin them? It was not fitting that such should themselves enter them except in fear. For them there is nothing but disgrace in this world, and in the world to come, an exceeding torment.” (S.2 V.114)
Stopping people from entering mosques can be done in different ways. The most obvious is physically stopping people, but sometimes other actions of ours could result in someone not wanting to come to the mosque because he or she feels disturbed. Such actions include having loud discussions in the mosque especially at the time of prayer or when people are praying, making disturbances outside the mosques, such that those inside cannot pray peacefully.

We must further enter mosques with utmost respect and fear of Allah SWT. Let us pray that Allah SWT give us the strength to follow the teachings of our religion and our prophet Muhammad SAW, and that we may have it in our hearts to build mosques, as well as assist in their maintenance, as well as frequent them as we have been commanded. Ameen.
