Translation of Khutba (Friday April 15, 2011)

All praise is due to Allah, may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger, his household and companions.

My dear brothers and sisters in Islam, our topic today is patience and giving thanks to Allah SWT.
Allah SWT says in the Quran in Surat Baqara:
O ye who believe! seek help with patient perseverance and prayer; for God is with those who patiently persevere (S.2 V.153)
Allah SWT tells us time and time again in the Quran that He is with those who are patient and that they, the patient ones, shall receive uncountable reward. Allah SWT says in the Quran in Surat Al-Anfal :
And obey God and His Apostle; and fall into no disputes, lest ye lose heart and your power depart; and be patient and persevering: For God is with those who patiently persevere (S.8 V.46)
We are told to obey Allah and his messenger, and Allah SWT knows that this is not always easy, but He tells us not to lose heart, to be patient and surely He will be with us. What more can we ask for but that Allah SWT be with us?

Along with being patient, we are reminded not to forget Allah, but that we should be grateful to Him in all situations.
Allah SWT says in the Quran in Surat Baqara:
Then do ye remember Me; I will remember you. Be grateful to Me, and reject not Faith. (S.2 V.152)
The Messenger of Allah, Muhammad SAW said that there is a unique happiness for the mumin When Allah bestows a favor on them, they are happy and thank Allah, and should a problem befall them, then they are patient. For a mumin, all actions earn them a reward from Allah SWT. Giving thanks to Allah SWT is a very important part of worship. It brings us closer to Allah and without a doubt increases our status before Allah SWT. The Prophet Muhammad SAW said that one who eats and then gives thanks to Allah SWT, he or she is like one who has fasted and is patient.

Further, the messenger of Allah SWT said that when Allah SWT sets a status for man, and the man is not able to attain this status just through his deeds or acts, then Allah SWT will bring down on that man some form of difficulty, through which when the man perseveres patience, then Allah SWT rewards him and he is able to attain the status that Allah SWT had set.

Hence we must not complain when we are faced with a difficulty, but rather we should turn to Allah SWT and be patient, surely that is best for us. But whilst we are reminded of the rewards of being patient and giving thanks to Allah, we are also told that there are consequences for those that are not grateful.

Allah SWT says in the Quran in Surat Ibrahim:
And remember! your Lord caused to be declared (publicly): "If ye are grateful, I will add more (favours) unto you; But if ye show ingratitude, truly My punishment is terrible indeed." (S.14 V.7)

Allah SWT in His mercy has never punished man without reason, and even when there has been reason, Allah the almighty and forgiving has shown His mercy. What is more, that Allah does not punish without warning and time and time again, just as He reminds us of His mercy, so he reminds us to be careful of His wrath.

Allah SWT gives us an example of his mercy, he says in the Quran in Surat Luqman:
Seest thou not that the ships sail through the ocean by the Grace of God?- that He may show you of His Signs? Verily in this are Signs for all who constantly persevere and give thanks. (S.31 V.31)

Had Allah SWT wanted, He would have made the water consistency to be such that it does not allow ships to float, or caused the winds to blow such that no ship could sail. And when such conditions do occur, it is important to persevere and Allah SWT for help. It is only through patience that Allah will help us.

My dear brothers and sisters, in hadith Qudsi Allah SWT says that if we all man and jinn, those before and those to come after us became like a man who is most repenting and most religious, it would make no difference to the glory or kingdom of Allah. And that if all men and jinn, those before and those after were to become like the most disobedient and ungrateful man, there would be no reduction or effect on the glory of Allah SWT. And that if all the man and jinn, those before and after gathered before Allah SWT and Allah SWT granted them all their desires, the reduction of Allah’s kingdom would be like the water lost after a needle has been dipped into an ocean.

Hence my brothers and sisters, us thanking Allah or not thanking Allah will make no difference to Him, His glory or kingdom, rather the benefit and consequences will be for us. The prophet of Allah, Muhammad SAW said that those who will be called to heaven will be those that praise Allah. The prophet SAW was asked, who are those that praise Allah, and he answered, those that thank Allah SWT at all times.

Let us pray that Allah SWT fill our hearts with understanding so that we may know to thank Allah SWT at all times, and fill our hearts with patience so that we may know to persevere in time of difficulty. But most important, let us pray that Allah SWT always guide us on the right path, so that no matter what the situation, we never forget Allah SWT ?Ameen.
