Translation of Khutba (Friday July 9, 2010) (Patience)

All praise is due to Allah, the Beneficent and the Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and companions.

Abi Saeed al-Khudri ( r.a) narrates, “A man from Ansar begged Rasool S.A.W and he S.A.W gave him. He begged again and again and Rasool S.A.W gave him until he had no more to give. Then he said to him, “whatever good I have, I don’t hold back from you. And any one who does not ask people, Allah provides for him. And any one who wants to be self satisfied Allah makes him self satisfied. Any one who wants to have patience Allah gives him patience. The best thing that Allah gives any one is to enhance his patience.”” (Al-Bukhari)
It is human nature that if he wants some thing but he can’t get it, he gets annoyed and grieved. Indeed rich people are not short of any thing but they are never satisfied. In the same way, if any one is afflicted by some of the calamities he gets annoyed and grieved.
As long as man live in this world, he is annoyed in all conditions.
Allah says in the Quran in Surah Al-Balad:
“Verily, We have created man in toil.” (S.90 V.4)
It means he is created for hardship and fatigue. And the hardship falls on all whether they are righteous or not righteous. The difficulty with the man of today is that whenever a calamity falls on him or he is refused with some thing, he can not bear it and he does not show patience. However, the way to success is clearly shown by Allah.
Allah says in the Quran in Surah al- Baqarah:
“And certainly, We shall test you with some thing of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to the patient “ (S.2 V.155)

The story of Umme Salmah (r.a) as narrated in Muslim is a clear example of patience. She did exactly as narrated in the Hadith. When Abu Salmah died, she said, “Inna Lillahi wa Inna ilehi Rajwoon. O! Allah give me reward in my this difficulty. And compensate me with some thing better than this. Then she said what can be better than Abu Salmah? When she completed her period of Iddat Rasool S.A.W. sent her a proposal to marry him. And she became Ummul Mominin.

Respected Brothers and sisters! The way to success is to have patience.
Imagine people befallen with calamities and afflictions for example, death of father or his son, loss of property and other afflictions of the world. They do not show patience. What do they do? They cry and shout. They panic and become sorrowful or drink alcohol. All these do not solve the problem. Neither this can bring back his son nor his property.
When we are afflicted and we do not bear it patiently and do not ask Allah for rewards then we will have pain in this world and loss in the Hereafter.
Allah says in the Quran in Surah Az-Zumar:
“…Only those who are patient shall receive their reward in full, without reckoning.” (S.39 V.10)
And that there is no limit for this reward. Allah also says in the Quran in Surah al- Baqarah:
“… but give glad tidings to the patient ” (S.2 V.155)
Momin is conscious that whatever comes to him is from Allah and there is always good in it for this world and for the Hereafter.
Hazrat Anas (r,a) narrates that Rasool S.A.W. said, “Good thing about Momin is that Allah decides for him only what is good for him.” (Narated by Imam Ahmad)
We know that all the difficulties and calamities have an end. The calamity is painful in its beginning and as time passes the pain decreases. It means severity of any calamity is in its beginning. Thus when a person dies you see his family weeping and screaming. Some time later they are briefly sad but they not shout and cry. Then some time later they forget the dead and wheel of life continues.
In fact the patience appears when calamity falls on someone. That is to say in the beginning of the calamity. Hazrat Anas (r.a) narrates : Once Rasool S.A.W.passed a woman who was crying beside a grave. Rasool S.A.W. said, “Fear Allah. Have patience.” She said, “Leave me alone. You don’t know my grief.” She did know Rasool S.A.W. Later people told her that this was Rasool S.A.W. She went to his doorstep and was astonished to find that there were no guards. She apologized, saying, “I did not know you.” Rasool S.A.W. said, “Patience is exercised at the first shock” (Al- Bukhari)

According to one Hadith narrated by Abi Saeed Al-Khudri in Al-Bukhari and Muslim, Nabi S.A.W. said, “Any affliction including fatigue, sorrow, grief, harm and sadness even caused by a prick of thorn that befalls on a Muslim but Allah expiate his sins in lieu of this affliction. I pray Allah and seek His forgiveness for myself and for you. Allah is most forgiving.

Khutbah Part 2

Muslim must be patient in all circumstances. We should also be patient in our worship.
Allah says in the Quran in Surah Taaha:
“And enjoin the Prayers on your family and be patient in offering them.…” (S.20 V.132)
We need to be patient to get victory. When inflictions upon Bani Israel increased and Pharaoh continued massacring them. Musa (A.S.)said to them, “Moses said to his people: “Seek help in Allah and be patient. Verily, the earth is Allah ‘s. He gives it as a heritage to whom he wills of his slaves. And the blessed end is for Muttaqeen.“ (Surah A’raaf S.7 V.128)
Both the General leadership and the religious leadership need to be patient.
Allah says in the Quran in Surah As-Sjdah:
“And We made from among them leaders, giving guidance under our command, when they were patient and used to believe with certainty in our verses.” (S.32 V.24)
In dealing with people also we must have patience.
Allah says in the Quran in Surah Fussilat:
“Nor can goodness and evil Be equal. Repel the evil with one which is better then verily he, between whom and you there was enmity, will become as tough he was a close friend. But none is granted it except those who are patient—and none is granted it except the owner of the great portion in this world. “ (S.41 V.34--35)
We must have patience for the company of pious people and people with inherent good.
Allah says in the Quran in Surah Al-Kahaf:
“And keep yourself patiently with those who call on their Lord morning and afternoon, seeking His face; and let not your eyes overlook them, desiring the pomp and glitter of the life of the world; and obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our Remembrance, and who follows his own lusts, and whose affair has been lost.” (S.18 V.28)
We can even say that Patience is tool of the prophets and messengers of Allah in their dealings.
Allah says in the Quran in Surah Al-Ahqaf:
“Therefore be patient as did the messengers of strong will and be in no haste about them. On the Day when they will see that torment with which they are promised, it will be as if they had not stayed more than an hour in a single day. O Mankind ! this Quran is clear message to save you from destruction. But shall any be destroyed except the people who are disobedient to Allah.” (S.46 V.35)

O Allah ! Give us affluence with Your Grace. untill we don’t need favor from any one.
